Choosing the best blinds

If you're looking for modern, stylish window dressings for your home, you can't go wrong with blinds. Easy to use and maintain, blinds can help regulate light and heat in your home while adding a contemporary vibe to any interior. But how do you choose the best blinds?

When choosing blinds, consider the reasons you wish to install them. Are you trying to block out sunlight, keep your privacy, reduce dampness or shade glare? The intended use of your blinds will influence the type of blind you choose.

Blinds come in many different shapes, sizes and styles. For example Venetian blinds are made of aluminium slats that extend across the window and tilt to allow more or less light in, while Roman blinds lie flat across the window and fold up at the top.

Blackout blinds can block out sunlight, glare and heat, giving you private spaces and ensuring your home remains cool and inviting. There are an excellent solution for bedrooms if you work night shifts and need to sleep during the day.

In terms of maintenance, aluminium, vinyl and faux wood blinds need very little additional care. Simply vacuum them when you clean the house (you can use a brush or upholstery attachment) and wipe them down with a cloth soaked in warm water and a little cleaning solution.

Wooden blinds, on the other hand, will need extra care. Some wood will not withstand moisture or cleaning chemicals, and will warp and crack if damp. Some blinds even need to be ultrasonically cleaned, which can only be done by a professional company.

With so many shapes, colors and styles to choose from, you can find the perfect blind to match your dcor. Try to choose light-colored blinds, like light blue or grey. Many people choose white blinds, but without regular dusting they will quickly look dirty.

Blinds like curtains - can be an interior design feature, adding character and colour to a room. In many rooms, such as kitchens, blinds are a safer option, as they don't hang directly over hot stovetops or food preparation areas.

Ask your local blinds showroom or interior design store for advice on choosing the best blinds for your home.
