Plans for Furniture: Mastering Outdoor Furniture Plans

In remodeling a house, often we tend to place a lot more awareness and attention in choosing the right furnishing and furniture within our home. Little did we realize that outdoor furniture plays a big role in beautifying our residences, too. An outdoor furniture can be anything from a minor porch chair, or a lovely wooden table on the patio.
If one can design and style a dollhouse that's complete with miniature furniture inside and outside, you too can designate one outdoors. Plans for furniture are best - for they come with in depth information, and which piece is apt, or not. With outdoor furniture, they're a lot more than just pieces that you can move around. They are thoroughly constructed to match one's style and needs for a fantastic home living.
Searching for the perfect outdoor furniture plan is a essential matter. Like plans for chairs, tables, and such, they could give you a number of concepts and information on constructing a specific furniture base d on your home needs. The type of furniture you are likely to construct must absolutely match your home's interior design too. A bunch of furniture have been purchased only to be wasted after a few weeks of use simply as a result of mismatched features and styles. It can be unfortunate to pay a bit of fortune on ready-made furniture, only to have them sold or worse, being put in a storage all dusty and pretty very much useless.
Other Important Factors to Take into account:
Furniture that could withstand the test of time. Many plans for furniture suggest weather-resistant ones. If you would like a classy look, you would really like the appeal and elegance of wooden outdoor furniture created from mahogany, rosewood, and teak. In addition, you should also consider your location's weather. Even though wood is basically resistant to mold, mildew, and water, you will want to coat it with a unique coating to last long.
Awkward Furniture vs. Placement. Many people make the mistake of shopping for or constructing chairs, tables, swings, etc only to end up regretting. Why? Simply because the very best furniture you can ever own relies on the location itself. You simply can't place a picnic table on a porch, or even a wicker chair at the dining area. While a large picnic table is just fine, it could merely serve its purpose by having it correctly positioned as part of your yard. So, when reading a plan, be sure to carefully observe all the essentials.
Designs Really Matter. Any one who appreciates the aesthetics will know exactly what this means - a good furniture need not be too flashy. If you appreciate Victorian designs, of course you'd have to choose a plan that simply talks about Victorian. No more, no less. The simpler your plan for furniture, the better your locale will look. When choosing a furniture plan, make sure that they have every thing you'd want in your house.
Exactly where to acquire these plans for furniture? Simple. Besides your local hardware, woodworking shops and the like, you can get as much as you want on the web. There are also plans for furniture which can be ordered on the web (with a fee) and a few of these plans integrate kits for beginners.
This FREE plans for furniture report will show you how just about everyone can construct furniture without the need of hiring a carpenter or breaking the bank!

Choosing Storm Doors

What comes to mind when you think about storm doors? If cheap aluminum doors that bang shut and are falling off their hinges jump to mind then it's time for an update. Times have changed. Storm doors today are are built from higher gauge aluminum and vinyl or plastic compounds making them significantly more sturdy than screen doors of the past.

When choosing a storm door, there are 4 main things to consider: Price, Material, Size, Handing, and Style.

First and foremost, you should stick to your budget. Storm doors range in price from around $100-$300 for standard size doors that you can find at Lowe's or Home Depot to around $300-$500 for custom sized doors ordered from the same retailers. Now be realistic, while you may find a coupon that gives you a good deal, a $100 screen door is not going to perform like a $500 storm door.

Now you may ask, "What makes a $500 sto rm door better than a $100 storm door?" The answer is the materials and the bells and whistles. Vinyl storm doors are less expensive than extruded aluminum storm doors. While you save money on the price, they will wear out faster because of exposure to the elements. However, you can get a wood-core vinyl door which is more sturdy and provides better insulation for a little bit more money. On a higher-end door you may get a choice of custom colors like cranberry, hunter green, or almond where on the lower end you can only have white or black. With more expensive doors you can usually choose a hardware color ranging from brass or silver to oil-rubbed bronze and antique brass. One important difference is most top end doors come with 2 door closure pistons instead of 1. They are mounted at the top and bottom of the door instead of just having one at the top of the storm door. This gives the door better rigidity and allows you to adjust the speed more. Keep in mind that the cost of a separate piston is only about $5.00, so don't spend an extra $100 on a door just to get a second door closure.

The best way to get a sense of the price is to either go into a national retailer like Lowe's or Home Depot and look at the storm doors or search online at or If you go to a store, be aware that while some associates may have general knowledge, most do not know the first thing about storm doors. I personally try to avoid them because in my experience none of them has ever actually installed a storm. To make matters worse, their training is minimal and they give cookie-cutter answers to all your questions. Personally, I like to shop online to compare prices and narrow down more what I am looking for.

Another thing to consider about pricing is that most storm doors are Energystar compliant, which means that your new door qualifies for an IRS tax credit. The credit can be up to as much as $500 and is claimed o n your next years taxes. So keep in mind that you can save money on your taxes by purchasing a higher end door.

All storm doors are made from metal, wood, vinyl/plastic, or some combination thereof. Less expensive doors use vinyl/plastic and may or may not have a wood core for added rigidity and insulation. More expensive doors are made from extruded aluminum ("extruded" means "shaped")

The benefits of vinyl/plastic doors are that they are less expensive to purchase, are easy to clean, and inexpensive to replace. With vinyl doors, especially Emco's Forever door, the color is molded throughout the door. This means that a scratch on the door is less visible because it is not a different color underneath. The drawbacks are that these storm doors wear out sooner, look "cheaper", and have trouble standing up to extreme heat and cold.

The benefits of an extruded aluminum door are that it is heavier, more durable, longer-lastin g, and better looking. They look classier and offer much more security. The drawbacks are that they are more expensive, are little harder to clean, require more maintenance, and can become hot to the touch when exposed to heat for a long time.

While you can order a storm door in whatever size you need, standard door widths (measured in inches) are 30", 32", and 36". Standard door heights (measured in inches) range from 80"-81" and 96" (for 8' feet tall doors). Traditionally, your front door opening is 36" wide by 80"-81" high. Back doors are traditionally 32" wide by 80"-81" high; however newer homes (built after 1990) have been also using 36" wide by 80"-81" high doors at times.

One of the most important questions down the road becomes, "Which way will the door open?" If you are dealing ordering from a retailer like Lowe's or Home Depot, it is imperative that the sales rep be crystal clear o n this. In the world of door installations, handing is everything. Now we get to some industry jargon.

First, ALL storm door measurements are assuming that you are standing OUTSIDE of your house looking at the door. Now, handing is stated as either "left-handed" or "right-handed." This means that if you but your back against the jamb where you want the door do be hinged, whichever hand of yours is on the outside is the "handing" of your door.

For example, let's say you but your back against the hinge side jamb of your front door and your right hand is facing the outside. Then you want a "right-handed" door.

The good news on handing is that most standard sized doors can be installed either way; you don't have to purchase a storm door that is pre-handed (unless you have an 8' tall door).

Now most of the time you want the storm door handles to be on the same side as the entry door handles. However, there are a few cases where this is not true. One such case is if you have a wall close to the opening. It is always preferable to have a storm door open towards a wall that is 12" or less from an entry door. This is to ensure that your "traffic pattern" is not interrupted. Meaning that people won't have to open and then walk around the storm door to get into the house. Doing this ensures that the storm door is not in your way when you enter and exit the house.

Storm doors come in 3 different styles: Full-View, Ventilating, and Roll-screen.

A Full-View door is one where you can have ONLY the glass panel OR the screen panel in the door at any given time. You must physically change the glass and the screen and store the panel that is not in use. If you want to maximize daylight and visibility to the outside, this is the way to go. As long as you don't mind installing the screen in the spring and the glass in the fall, you will be happy with this door. It does not have a line across the middle of the door obstructing visibility.

If you do not want to go through the hassle of changing glass and screen, the ventilating style keeps both glass and screen in the door at the same time. With this style, there are 2 panels of glass, and depending on the manufacturer, one or both move up and down revealing the screen portion and allowing for ventilation.

The Rollscreen models are the newest hybrids and take the best of both worlds from the Fullview and the Ventilating style. In this style, the screen is still self storing like the ventilating model, but you get the visibility of a fullview door because the screen is rolled up on a tensioned dowel at the top of the door. As you pull the top window down, the screen is attached and then revealed. This is a great choice of you have kids or pets that have a keen ability to destroy screens, because teh screen is only on t he top part of the door . . . far out of their reach.

Once you have decided which style, then it is time to decide which manufacturer.

There are 4 main storm door manufacturers: Pella, Larson, Emco, and Anderson. Lowe's Home Improvement sells Pella and Larson brands while Home Depot sells Emco and Anderson products. From an installer's perspective, I would rank these manufacturers in order of preference based on product selection, price, durability, warranty, ease of installation, customer service, and fewest number of problems in the long run as:

1) Pella Brand Storm Doors
2) Larson Brand Storm Doors
3) Anderson Brand Storm Doors
4) Emco Brand Storm Doors

San Francisco Doctor: Folic Acid Facts and Fallacies

I am a doctor in the San Francisco bay area and I would like to share my knowledge and research on folic acid and folate. At the end of this article, if your mother or grandmother told you to eat your vegetables, I will tell you some of the reasons she was right. I will also tell you the functions and benefits of folate for various biochemical and physiologic processes and which form of folic acid is good for you. I will also give you tips on how to avoid the bad form of folic acid.

The article, Is Your Breakfast Giving You Cancer?, in the April issue of Prevention magazine has generated attention and concern regarding folic acid in my San Francisco bay area community, and elsewhere. The article brought up recent findings that folic acid, the synthetic form of folate, seems to cause an increase in colon, lung and prostate cancers. Understandably this should rouse serious concern because folic acid is in the vast majority of folic acid fortified foods and off-the-shelf vitamins. More importantly, pregnant woman are told to take folic acid. This article was released following recent studies reported in the November 18, 2009 issue of JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association), along with some recent studies, that show that increased folic acid intake contains significant risks 1 2 3.

San Francisco Doctor: Folic Acid Facts

As I have been telling my patients in the San Francisco bay area, you need to know that it is crucial to know the different forms of folic acid.

Folic acid is the synthetic form while folate is the natural form. Technically, the oxidized form of folic acid is called Pteroyl-L- Glutamic acid, which does not naturally occur in foods. There is no naturally occurring biochemical reaction that utilizes this form. It must be converted using a particular enzyme in order to be used in your body. It happens to be the most stable for adding in food, thus, it is often used in fortifying foods with folic acid. However, an estimated 33 % of people are genetically deficient in this enzyme that converts this folic acid form for it to be used by your body.

On the other hand, L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (L-5-MTHF) is the naturally occurring form of folic acid. Technically, this is called folate. It naturally occurs in foods. It is referred to as the active form because it does not need to be converted to another form for used in your body.

What are the functions and benefits of L-5-MTHF?
- DNA repair
- amino acid metabolism
- biosynthesis of neurotransmitters
- involved in development of the myelin covering of nerve cells
- key detoxification reactions called methylation
- proper division of red blood cells
- reducing homocysteine
- regulation of gene expression; the control of healthful genes being turned on and harmful genes being turned off
- prevention of neural tube defects in developing embryos (spina bifida)

As I have mentioned in my other articles/blogs, the importance of folic acid in preventing neural tube defects was clearly proven by Drs. McCulley and Smithells from the 1960s through the 1990s in multiple studies. Although synthetic form folic acid, was used in these studies, only 200 to 400 mcg were used, which is indicated as fairly safe.

San Francisco Doctor: Folic Acid Fallacies

Does excess intake of folic acid possibly increase the risk for cancer?

From the study by Cole [4], those people taking 1000 mcg of folic acid with a previous history of colorectal cancer had a 2.3 times increased risk of recurrence within 6- 8 years. It is important to note that in this study folic acid, not folate, was used, and at the start of the study, the people participating in the study had significantly lower vitamin B12 levels. Also note that each nutrient works synergistically with others, not in isolation from other nutrients. Problems will likely occur when a study is designed where one nutrient is given at a high dose while excluding others. Even more so, when synthetic forms are used.

Stolzenberg-Solomon, et al[5] studied the effects of an average intake of 853 mcg/day of folic acid by postmenopausal women that consume alcohol. The result shows an increased risk of breast cancer for folic acid intake at higher doses. Furthermore, those women with the higher intake of alcohol were at greater risk of breast cancer. What is the takeaway from this study? The synthetic form of folate at high doses is a problem.

What studies show that folate form is protective against cancer?

In 2006, an article[6] in The Journal of Nutrition and Cancer essentially reported that a diet with significant quantities of foods containing folate and vitamins B6, B12, C, E, selenium (a mineral) and lycopene (a phytonutrient) protects against various types of cancer, including colorectal cancer.
From careful reading of all the studies in this topic by nutritionists like myself, it is clear that the synthetic folic acid and the natural folate form are metabolized differently and used by the body differently. Therefore, it is a fallacy to equate the supplemental use of folate with folic acid regarding the increased risk of colon cancer or other cancers. I do not recommend taking supplemental folic acid at more than 400 mcg/day. Unfortunately, folic acid is what you get in most off-the-shelf supplements. Some of the professional nutritional supplement manufacturers have switched to folate in recent years since research on this started coming out.

How to avoid getting the synthetic folic acid:
- Avoid all highly processed grains.
- Look for L-5 methyltetrahydrofolate in the Supplement Facts table of the supplement bottle. If folic acid is listed on the label, don't use it!
- Do not buy a cheap multivitamin with folic acid thinking that it is better than nothing, especially if you have a family history of colon cancer
- Eat plenty of dark green leafy vegetables daily, preferably organic
- Consult an experienced and knowledgeable nutritional expert who knows and understands the nuances of nutrition and keeps up-to-date with current research. Test them: have them explain the differences between folic acid, folate and L-5 methyltetrahydrofolate. If they cannot, find someone else.

As promised, key reasons why eat your vegetables is absolutely one of the best pieces of advice:

1. Dark green leafy vegetables such as kale, Swiss or rainbow chard, mustard greens and collard greens, contain folate in high amounts.
2. Nutrients work synergistically. Vegetables have various nutrients that work together in your body.

If you have any questions regarding folic acid or help with where to buy multivitamins/supplements that contain folate, contact me at, whether or not you are in the San Francisco bay area.

Thinking of Buying an Elliptical Cross Trainer?

If you are considering buying an elliptical cross trainer for your home gym you need to do a little research first. Many of us buy the first thing we see, especially when making an impulsive purchase or we want the product as soon as possible. However, if you want to get real value for money and more importantly achieve noticeable results you may find the following advice to be quite helpful.
Firstly, consider the size of the machine in comparison with the location in which you will use it. Generally, elliptical cross trainers are bulky in size and are not easy to store away. If you are buying mail order, where you physically cannot gauge the size of the item you should take time to read the measurements provided by the retailer. Once you have these measurements check out if you have enough space to locate the trainer.
The second factor to consider is the price. There are numerous suppliers selling home gym equipment and the trick is to find a retailer who ca n offer you a quality product for a reasonable price. Don't be fooled by gimmicks or celebrity endorsements. Adding a celebrity name to a product usually just increases the price, not the overall quality!
When buying a machine such as an elliptical cross trainer seek out a specialist retailer. They are more likely to have higher quality products than high street retailers or mass market mail order companies (who often compete on price alone). Not only will a specialist retailer be able to offer a quality product, but they will also be able to offer you advice before you buy and guidance on how to use your product once you have got it home. Many will welcome your questions as they will want you to buy the product that is right for you. Discuss with the retailer what you actually want to achieve from your cross trainer. For example if you want to improve upper body strength and definition your retailer will be able to guide you to the product which can provide the most resistance in this area. A specialist retailer is also more likely to provide you with a warranty and after sale care service should anything go wrong with your purchase.
Once you have chosen your elliptical trainer consider the delivery method. Do you need to collect it from the store (in which case you need to ensure you have a vehicle large enough to accommodate such a machine)? Alternatively, if you have bought the product from a specialist retailer online do they offer free home delivery? The cost of home delivery can be hidden until you reach the checkout and on such a heavy item you may be surprised with the charges many retailers will impose. You need to ask if you are still getting good value for money based on the overall, delivered cost of the item. Also, enquire about in-home delivery before making your purchase. Will the delivery company simply leave the item on your door-set or are they happy to deliver it to the room of your choice? On top of this service a select number of retailers will actually ask if you would like the delivery person to unpack and build your cross trainer so it is ready to be used. With such a heavy item this is a great benefit.
Once the cross trainer is installed in your home you need to focus on the most important factor of all you need to use it! Too many of us invest in home gym equipment, only to leave it gathering dust just a couple of months after delivery.

The Cross Sound Ferry

Gray and charcoal strata, blanketing the morning sky and the dense, dark green conifer cover of southeastern Connecticut, released deluges of rain and thunderous claps. Patches of ground-hugging condensation, like the smoke tendrils created by a multitude of campfires, spiraled upward.
New London, located on the Thames River and proudly displaying its heritage with several preserved, historic buildings, had been founded in 1646 by John Winthrop, Jr., developing into an important harbor. Boasting a fleet of 30 ships and some 900 employees by 1834, it had become the third-largest whaling port after New Bedford and Nantucket, and today is a small transportation hub: buses deposit passengers in front of the railroad station, its gently curving track, river-paralleling track carrying both Amtrak and Metro North trains, while the harbor serves as the Cross Sound Ferry Company's water gateway to Block Island and Long Island, the huge, steel ramps of its boats releasing cars and trucks by the dozens every hour.
Although the 2:00 p.m. run to Orient Point had just inched away from the dock on that sweltering August day, vehicles booked for the 3:00 departure had already taken their positions in the numerous boarding lanes.
Privately owned and operated by brother-and-sister team Adam and Jessica Wronowski and headquartered in New London itself, the Cross Sound Ferry Company was established to circumvent the geographical challenges posed by Long Island and Connecticut. Separated by the East River and Long Island Sound, Long Island extends more than 110 miles from New York, its northern coast roughly paralleling the southern shore of Connecticut, yet the two landmasses are only connected by means of the Whitestone and Throgs Neck bridges. Depending upon a person's proximity, he could theoretically have to drive between 100 and 200 miles on the two easterly-westerly arteries the Long Island Expressway and Interstate 95 to reach his destination.
Remedying these deficiencies, the Cross Sound Ferry Company inaugurated scheduled, passenger and vehicle service between Long Island's East End at Orient Point and New London, Connecticut, in 1975, forging the vitally needed link for the first time.
Numerous factors, including Long Island's population surge, the East End's increase in vineyard-related tourism, the establishment of Connecticut's Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casino complexes, and the often traffic-choked roads, resulted in dramatic growth, with up to 23 daily departures in each direction during the peak season and more than one million annual passengers carried.
It operates a motley, eight-vessel fleet.
The Caribbean, sporting a 128-foot overall length and powered by a 1,440-hp engine, had been built in 1972 by Blount Marine in Warren, Rhode Island, for Caribbean archipelago and West Indian services, but was acquired by Cross Sound five years later. Accommodating 130 passengers and 22 vehicles, it was retrofitted with a new pilot house and loading ramp in 1995.
The North Star, constructed in 1968 in Morgan City, Louisiana, to serve as an offshore supply vessel, had been purchased in 1984 and converted for current use by Eastern Marine Shipyard in Panama City, Florida. Powered by a 1,800-hp engine, the 168-foot-long boat accommodates 300 passengers and 35 vehicles.
The 260-foot-long New London, resembling the North Star with its aft, elongated, exposed car deck, had been built in 1979 by the Thames Shipyard and Repair Company in New London itself, but was retrofitted with an upper cabin in 1992 and a 2,400-hp Cummins KTA38-M2 diesel engine two years later, affording speeds of up to 15 knots. It is one of only three vessels in the fleet to do so. Accommodating the same number of passengers as the North Star, it offers sufficient deck space for almost double its cars, or 60.
The 840-passenger, 80-vehicle, 250-foot Susan Anne, constructed in 1964, began its life as the Prince Nova, operating the shuttle service between Caribou, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Extensively modified by the Thames Shipyard and Repair Company after Cross Sound had acquired it in 1998, it received a new passenger cabin, airline-style and booth seating, hydraulic lift decks, renewed engine room systems, new electrical equipment, and an improved propulsion system. Now powered by a 4,600 hp GM turbo-charged diesel engine, the round-bilge hulled ferry also attains 15-knot speeds.
The Mary Ellen, built in 1983 and acquired 20 years later, is 260 feet long and carries 800 passengers and 85 vehicles. Powered by a 3,100-hp engine, it is the third to achieve 15-knot cruise speeds.
Dimensionally the largest, at 327 feet, and the most historic vessel in the fleet, the Cape Henlopen had been built in 1941 as a World War II tank-carrying craft in Jefferson ville, Indiana, then designated the USS LST 510, and partook of the D-Day invasion by landing on Omaha Beach in Normandy, for which it won a battle star. Converted for civilian use as a passenger-vehicle ferry in 1966, it served the Lewes, Delaware, to Cape May, New Jersey, route, before being acquired by Cross Sound 17 years later. Retrofitted with a 3,000-hp EMD 12-645 diesel engine in 1995, the boat carries 900 passengers and 90 cars within its 55-foot beam, attaining 12.5-knot speeds.
The Sea Jet I, designed by InCat of Australia and constructed by the Nichols Brothers Shipyard in Seattle, Washington, in 1989, is the fastest and only pure-passenger vessel in the fleet. The 122-foot-long, wave-piercing catamaran, with a 5,000 hp engine and a Maritime Dynamics ride control system, had served three routes before being purchased in 1995: Boston-Nantucket, inter-Hawaiian island commuter service, and San Diego-Catalina Island. Its 400 passengers, accommodated in airline-style seats on two decks, cross the sound in 40 minutes at 30-knot speeds.
The largest-capacity, only specifically designed ferry for the Cross Sound system is the m/v John H, which was scheduled to operate the 3:00 departure to Orient Point. Constructed in 1989 by the Eastern Marine Shipping Company in Panama City, the boat, with a 240-foot length, 60-foot beam, and ten-foot draft, is the largest to be classed under the US Coast Guard's Subchapter T regulations, certified for operation on lakes, in bays, and on sounds.
Delivered on June 22, 1989, the 98-ton ferry, built of steel, features a dual-level auto deck for 120 vehicles; a forward bar and lounge; a mid-cabin with a Cross Sound Deli venue; an aft cabin and game arcade; and an upper-deck with outside seating for a total passenger complement of 1,000. Flat-screen televisions are positioned throughout.
Recently retrofitted with a cleaner-burning, lower nitrogen oxide, 3,000-hp diesel reduction engine, it attains 13-knot cruise speeds. Its call sign is WAC 6768.
Swallowing the multitude of cars and flat-bed trucks lining the boarding lanes through its aft entry and ingesting them into its cavernous, main deck hold, the m/v John H retracted its hydraulically-actuated ramp and appendage itself from Connecticut soil, almost imperceptibly inching away from the dock with a low, vibrating growl from its engine.
Gliding through the dark blue surface of the Thames River, it departed New London Harbor, the east coast's most accessible, deep-water port because of its Atlantic Ocean proximity, and passed the Electric Boat Shipyard Division of General Dynamics, located on the east side, in Groton. It is one of only two US sites where nuclear submarines are built and serviced.
Having sailed two miles, the boat passed a rocky point on the west side of the River Thames marking its entrance and guarded by the New London Harbor Light. The result of increasing seaborne traffic, the lighthouse, in its original form, had been constructed in 1761 on a 64-foot stone tower topped by a wooden lantern, itself replacing a temporary, mid-1700s beacon.
Secondarily replaced in 1801 by an 89-foot stone tower and cast iron lantern after a large crack had weakened the structure two years earlier, the octagonal brownstone lighthouse, the fourth in North America and the first on Long Island Sound, ranks as Connecticut's oldest and one of the first to feature a flashing light. The keeper's house, added in 1863, was enlarged at the turn-of-the-century.
Sporting a fixed white and red sector warning light, the New London Harbor Light today remains an active aid to navigation, alerting ships of dangerous Sarah Ledge.
As if serving as a first-generation GPS waypoint, the lighthouse became the first of many to be negotiated on the ferry's southwesterly course across Long Island Sound, which it presently entered.
The stately appearing, red brick New London Ledge Light, featuring a mansard roof and granite details, slowly moved by off the port wide, marking the harbor's entrance.
Sparked by Industrial Revolution-created traffic, for which the New London Harbor Light had been deemed inadequate, because of a prevalence of invisible, outlying ledges and shoals, and dictated by coastal Connecticut home owners who wished to maintain the area's elegant uniformity with its French Second Empire style, it had been constructed in 1901 by the Hamilton R. Douglas Company of New London. It was one of the last New England lighthouses built.
Its crib had been towed to the site and filled with concrete and rip rap before being sunk in 28 feet of water, while its 50-square-foot concrete pier, rising 18 feet above the low tide, had been erected on top of it. Three levels of windows represented an equal number of floors. A cast iron lantern, originally sporting a four-order Fresnel lens and incandescent oil vapor lamp, rose from the mansard roof. A fog signal was added in 1911. Its light consisted of 30-second interval single-red and triple-white flashes.
In 1987, it became the last Long Island Sound lighthouse to become automated.
Maintaining 13 knots, the m/v John H inched past Fishers Island.
The Gothic revival style Race Rock Lighthouse, perched on a round base, soon moved by on the left side. Located at the west end of the island, the mini-castle-appearing structure marked a particularly precarious area whose small rock spurs, penetrating 70 feet of water, had been the cause of numerous shipwrecks and collisions. It had first been lit on January 1, 1879.
Swallowed by the almost reference less void formed by the dirty-white cloud mist above and the surreal mirror sheen of Long Island Sound below somewhere between New London and Orient Point, the m/v John H maintained a barely registrable 13 knots, its motion only verifiable by the frothy wake it trailed. But a thin pencil line marked its origin and destination, seemingly equidistant between its stern and bow. A strong wind, attempting to counteract the soupy humidity and sulfuric heat, was only marginally triumphant.
Long Island Sound itself, bounded by Winchester County, New York, and the Bronx in the west and Orient Point and Plum, Gull, and Fishers islands in the east, measures 90 miles long by three to 20 miles wide, resulting in a 1,180-square-mile, semi-enclosed area sandwiched between the East River and Block Island Sound. It formed part of the Atlantic International Waterway.
Its basin, formed by per-glaciation stream flows, lowered as a result of two glacial advances, increasing its water depth by more than 100 feet and transforming it from a fresh water, non-tidal lake to a saline, tidal area of the ocean.
The mouth of the Connecticut River, located at Old Say-brook, empties into the sound, while most of its drainage, along with that of the Housatonic and Thames rivers, rapidly flow out at its open eastern end through a drainage basin which is almost 13 times its area.
Its waters are rich in bluefish, lobster, crabs, clams, and oysters, while its watershed supports some eight million people.
In the forward lounge on the m/v John H, the passengers sipped alcoholic beverages, while others purchased a snack or late lunch from the Cross Sound Deli in the mid-cabin. Television watching and reading were prevalent in the aft section, and a handful weathered the rays and winds on the open deck above.
The Gull Islands, located seven miles northeast of Orient Point and midway between Plum and Fishers islands, steadily moved off the port side.
Once the site of a military fort, Great Gull sported a wildlife research station after the American Museum of Natural History established it in 1948 in order to study migratory terns.
Purchased by Samuel Wyllys in 1659, Little Gull, progressing through several owners, ultimately fell into government hands with its 1803, $800 acquisition of it in order to construct a lighthouse on an optimal, one-acre, high-tide location. Other than some existing, foundation-conducive rocks, all its other required building materials had to be transported to the island by sea.
The 59-foot tower, comprised of smoothly-hammered freestone laid in courses and internally featuring a wooden, spiral, lantern room-terminating staircase, became operational in 1805, and a separate, one-and-a-half floor, wooden keeper's quarters contained two rooms on the main level and one on the upper level. A circular, 100-foot-diameter, 11-foot-thick stone wall, intended for storm protection, had subsequently been added during the summer of 1817.
A larger, 81-foot lighthouse, constructed in 1867 on a five-foot-thick, brick wall-lined base, replaced the earlier structure, and was attached to a wood and granite keeper's house three years later. A second-order Fesnel lens was first used in December of 1869.
Ending 177 years of attendance, the station succumbed to automation in 1978.
Arcing into a left turn in the now-deep blue water reflecting the powder blue sky, the m/v John H entered "the race," so designated because of the often-exceeding five-knot tidal water currents which combined with strong winds and heavy onshore seas to produce dangerous rip tides. Cracking sizzling white caps with its bow, it seesawed on its longitudinal axis.
Plum Island, the largest of the three atolls extending northeastward into the sound from Long Island, had, like Little Gull, been purchased by Samuel Wyllys in 1659 from Wyandanch, the Mont-auk Sachem. In 1775, it had been the site of an amphibious landing by continental troops under the direction of General David Wooster so that they could thwart potential livestock raids by the British, while a coastal artillery base had been built more than a century later, in 1899, during the Spanish-American War. Always assuming a protective role, it had guarded Long Island Sound and New York Harbor during the two world wars, occupied by some 1,000 soldiers during its peak, remainders of which include the smaller batteries and the brick quarters in which they had been housed. Utilizing some of the old officers' and animal quarters until 1984, the US Department of Agriculture established a laboratory there.
A 40-foot, rough stone tower, topped by ten reflecting lamps, constituted the island's first beacon in 1827, one year after Richard Jerome had sold three of its 840 acres to the US government. Replaced by a 23-foot taller, dual-floor, granite, and almost church-appearing structure in 1869, it marked the western point's traditionally treacherous waters.
Emitting a barely audible hum, the m/v John H cruised past Plum Gut Harbor, moving abreast of the black-and-white, rock outcropping-perched Orient Point Lighthouse, located just off the point after which it had been named and indicating imminent arrival.
Constructed between 1898 and 1899 to mark the end of Oyster Point Reef and guide ships through Plum Gut's dangerous currents, the lighthouse, comprised of curved, cast iron plates bolted together to form a truncated cone, rested on a circular, 21-foot-diameter caisson filled with concrete and externally lined with brick. It itself used a portion of the rocky Oyster Point as its foundation. The 64-foot structure, often-dubbed the "coffee pot" because of its appearance, listed five degrees toward the southeast. It became automated in 1966.
Reducing speed and the corresponding size of the turquoise enturbulation generated by its wake, the ferry departed Long Island Sound, passing through Gardiner's Bay before initiating a right, final approach turn toward the tip of the North Fork, the departing, Connecticut-bound Mary Ellen, sporting its two aft, gold-and-black stacks, circumventing the m/v John H's bow in a left arc as it passed the Orient Point Lighthouse.
One more lighthouse "waypoint" remained before docking, the Orient Long Beach Bar Light, which marked the entrance to Orient Harbor.
Perched on a screw pile platform, which itself penetrated ten feet of sand on the bay's bottom, the 60-foot-tall structure was topped by a fifth order lens with a fixed red light, while the wood-framed, dual-floor keepers' house had been covered with a mansard roof.
During the winter, its spindly legs often became encased in two-foot-thick ice. In 1824, for instance, it tore way the dock, and in 1881 it broke three of its pilings and almost all of its braces.
The sandbar, increasingly distancing itself from the lighthouse, ultimately rendered it superfluous, and by 1963, it had been altogether destroyed by arson.
By 1990, a tri-section, working replica of the original, which was nicknamed "bug light" because it resembled a bug walking on the water, had been constructed and barged out to the site, where it was crane-assembled. Controlled by the US Coast Guard three years later, it was once again designated an official navigation aid.
Laboriously moving through the harbor, the m/v John H ceased motion, opening its forward, mouth-like boarding ramp and apprehending itself to land after a 16.5-mile Long Island Sound crossing by means of its multiple lighthouses, and disgorged the parade of vehicles from its cavernous hold on to Orient Point, the easternmost Hamlet in the town of Southold and gateway to the North Fork's vineyards, farms, and the nautical village of Greenport.

Energy Efficient Dehumidifiers

There are many reasons that you may need a dehumidifier in your home. The excess moisture build up in the home may be the cause of many problems such as mold build up and numerous health issues. First you need to determine if you actually need a dehumidifier, and if you do, do you want to have one permanently installed or do you want to purchase one of many portable dehumidifiers that are on the market? No matter what choice you make, you want to purchase one of the most energy efficient dehumidifiers that you can.

Excessive moisture in the home is one of the most damaging problems that can occur. It can be the cause of mold and mildew and help speed up the deterioration of the structural elements of the home. If used when needed, a dehumidifier can help you avoid damages that are caused by the moisture. If you attack the moisture problem from the structural areas first you can determine if a dehumidifier is going to help. If your moisture problem is not structural related, then an energy efficient dehumidifier will help remove the excess moisture from your home. You will notice that you have excess moisture because you will begin to notice musty smells, water droplets on your windows or you may see mold starting to develop in your bathroom.

The size of the dehumidifier depends on the size of your home and if you are using it to remove moisture from the whole house or just certain rooms. Portable dehumidifiers are excellent choices if you only have moisture problems in certain rooms. If you suffer from asthma, you may want to put a portable dehumidifier in your bedroom to ensure that you get a good night sleep. The other people in the home may not be affected by the humidity level at all. Basements tend to hold much more moisture than any other place in the house and are usually great places for energy efficient dehumidifiers.

Portable dehumidifiers come in many different shapes and sizes. There are some that are very small for one room that have a tub built into them that you manually empty, and there are those that need to be drained out through another source such as a hose connected to a drain. The most energy efficient dehumidifiers are one that have a fan with multiple speeds. The speed of the fan of course determines how hard the dehumidifier is working and how much energy is being used. The lower the speed the less energy. According to Energy Star, energy efficient dehumidifiers with an energy factor of 3.56 are the best, 1.2 are the worst, with the middle ground being 1.62.

To make sure that you are getting the right size portable dehumidifier you need to know the total square footage of the room it will be in. If the room is damp to you while you are in it, needs a dehumidifier that will remove at least 10 pints of moisture for every 500 feet of space. Rooms that are very wet and smell wet will need something that has a larger capacity dehumidifier.

So, if you are looking for an energy efficient dehumidifier, take into consideration the Energy Star rating and the amount of water that it will remove within a 24 hour period of time.

How to Buy a Dehumidifier for Your Home

Do You Have a Household Moisture Problem?
If you notice creaking floors, condensation developing on windows, or exacerbated allergy symptoms, your home's humidity levels may be out of whack. Low humidity levels can cause problems such as increased static electricity; respiratory problems; and cracking and peeling of furniture and paint, but purchasing an inexpensive humidifier for your home is an easy solution. However, high humidity levels are often a more challenging problem. If your home is too wet, it can be a breeding ground for mildew growth; stained ceilings and walls; and excess condensation on windows and mirrors. Those living in hot, humid climates may also find that their homes provide the optimal environment for pests such as termites.
All About Humidity Levels
We hear about humidity daily in weather reports, and humidity is often likened to that muggy, steam-room feeling you experience on a summer day. Humidity is usually expressed in ways such as absolute humidity and relative humidity. Absolute humidity refers to the mass of water vapor divided by the mass of dry air in a volume of air at a given temperature. As such, the hotter the air, the more water it contains.
On the other hand, relatively humidity refers to the ratio of the current absolute humidity to the highest possible absolute humidity. If an environment has 100 percent relative humidity, this means the air is saturated with water vapor and can hold no more moisture. As a result, this creates the possibility of rain. Overall, humans are quite sensitive to humidity because the skin relies on air to get rid of moisture. Sweating is your body's way of keeping cooling and maintaining its current temperature. This is why you feel much hotter than the actual temperature when humidity levels are high. Conversely, when there is low relatively humidity, you feel much cooler than the actual temperature because sweat is quickly evaporating and cooling us off. In other words, if the air temperature is 75 F with zero relative humidity, the temperature will feel like it's 69 F. However, if the relative humidity is 100 percent at the same air temperature, it will feel like it's 80 F.
With that in mind, according to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Standard Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy, it is recommended that relative humidity be kept between 30% to 50% in the summer, and 30% to 40% in the winter. In order to measure humidity levels, you can purchase a small, inexpensive hygrometer (often called a humidity sensor or relative humidity indicator). This device measures the humidity level in your home and will confirm whether there is too little or too much humidity. Once you are aware of the humidity levels in your home, you can then decide if you need to take action.
Again, if your air is too dry, you can regulate moisture levels with a humidifier. However, if your air is too moist, a dehumidifier can help maintain the indoor relative humidity at the desired level, control musty odors, and protect furniture from water damage.
What is a Dehumidifier?
Dehumidifiers are household appliances that help reduce the humidity levels in the air. There are primarily two types of humidifiers - desiccant and mechanical.
Desiccant dehumidifiers (or passive dehumidifiers) are named for their use of a desiccative substance to dehumidify the air. This substance has an affinity for water vapor, and the dehumidifying process involves exposing the desiccant matter to an air stream with high relative humidity. These dehumidifiers do not utilize compressors and are best used in areas with low temperatures and relatively low humidity levels. Desiccant dehumidifiers can also be used instead of mechanical units or in combination with them. Although not as efficient as mechanical models, they are usually very inexpensive to purchase. Examples of desiccant dehumidifiers would be the Eva-Dry EH-500F and the Eva-Dry EDV300.
Mechanical dehumidifiers (or active dehumidifiers), however, are much more common, efficient, and are simply air conditioners with both the hot and cold coils in the same box. A fan draws the room's air over the cold coil of the AC to condense the moisture, and this is often collected into a bucket. Dry air will then pass through the hot coil to heat it back up to its original temperature. Therefore, mechanical dehumidifiers will slightly raise the air temperature, as opposed to air conditioners, which will cool the air as it dehumidifies it. Examples of mechanical dehumidifiers would be the NewAir AD-400 and the Soleus CFM40.
How to Buy a Dehumidifier
When shopping for a dehumidifier, there are several factors to consider such as the size of the unit, dehumidification capacity, and safety features. Below is a list of some of the most common things to look for when choosing a dehumidifier and what they mean to you:
Size: The size of a dehumidifier is generally based on the amount of moisture extracted from the air in 24 hours, which is usually measured in pints. Purchase a larger capacity model over a smaller one because larger units can dehumidify more area in a shorter amount of time. Furthermore, a dehumidifier with a smaller capacity may run continuously and still not lower the humidity to proper levels.
Portability: If you're looking to move your dehumidifier from room to room, look for a unit that is compact, lightweight, and includes a carrying handle or rolling casters.
Built-In Humidistat: If you'd like to be able to adjust different humidity levels, finding a dehumidifier with a humidistat is key. This feature will automatically turn the unit on/off depending on the humidity setting.
Automatic Shut-Off: This function will allow you to turn the unit on or off without having to unplug it, and it also prevents overfilling when the storage tank is full.
Low Temperature Operation / Automatic Defrost: If you may be using the dehumidifier in temperatures colder than 65 F, look for a unit that has an anti-frost sensor and can operate in cold temperatures. This prevents quick cycling and frost from accumulating on the sensor.
Storage Tank Capacity: Almost all dehumidifiers have storage tanks for the collected water. If you're not planning to purchase a model with a continuous drainage port, you'll have to empty the tank periodically. If the dehumidifier is to be placed in an area where you may not be able to empty it frequently, look for a tank size of at least 15 pints.
Continuous Drainage: Dehumidifiers with a continuous drainage port will eliminate the hassle of emptying a condensation tank. Simply attach a hose to the dehumidifier, and the moisture will drain out through the hose.
Washable / Removable Air Filter: Dehumidifiers that have washable filters trap airborne dust and particles. If the filter is washable, this makes maintenance a breeze: simply pull out the filter; rinse it with mild soap and water; and replace it back within the unit.

8 Easy Steps For Buying A Dehumidifier

Dehumidifiers are great for removing excess moisture from your indoor air and achieving relative humidity levels. By making the air less moist, dehumidifiers can help to get rid of problems such as sinuses, skin problems, mold and mildew, rotting furniture etc. But in order to benefit from a dehumidifier, you first need to buy the right one for your home.
This buying guide lists all the important criteria that need to be considered when buying a dehumidifier.
Criteria For Selecting Dehumidifiers
1) Dehumidifier Size: It is important to buy the right sized dehumidifier for your home so that you can dehumidify air adequately and also do not end up wasting money with a larger-than-needed dehumidifier. So, here are the factors to consider for sizing your dehumidifier.
You have to measure the area of the room or your home, which needs to be dehumidified. Once you know the area in square feet, you have to select a unit which has the capacity to effectively dehumidify areas of that size. Remember that the capacity mentioned on the dehumidifier is what can be achieved in optimum test conditions, which are not likely to be present in your home. Thus, to be on the safe side, you should choose a dehumidifier with a moisture removal capacity that is slightly more than what is required by you.
Another important factor for sizing is the moisture content of your indoor air. Some rooms may be small in area but could have high moisture levels, thus needing a larger unit. Whereas some larger rooms with lower humidity levels could make do with a smaller dehumidifier. Thus, you should check the humidity levels in your home, ascertain how much moisture needs to be removed to obtain the desired humidity, and then choose a dehumidifier that has the capacity to remove that much moisture.
2) Outdoor Humidity: In addition to the humidity levels inside your home, you also have to consider outdoor humidity levels. If you live in areas with high natural humidity, you will require a larger unit than those who live where there is lower natural humidity (area being the same).
3) Standard v/s Low Temperature Dehumidifiers: If you live in areas where the temperature of the air that needs to be dehumidified is less than 60 degrees F, a standard dehumidifier is likely to be ineffective as its coils can frost up due to the low temperatures. In such a case, you will need to buy a unit that is a Low Temperature model. Such units are meant for use where temperatures can go as low as 45 degrees F, with no damage to the coils, and effective dehumidification.
4) Automatic Shut Off: With this option, your dehumidifier will automatically shut down when the water reservoir is full so that there is no overflowing of water. Thus, if you do not want to constantly keep checking the water bucket, you should choose a model with automatic shut off.
5) Continuous Drainage: Once the water bucket gets filled in your dehumidifier, you have to manually empty it out before starting the unit again. As large dehumidifiers can have water buckets with high capacities, it can get quite difficult to lift the heavy buckets and empty them. Thus, you should choose a unit with a continuous drainage system, or where you can attach a hose to the drain, especially if you require a large dehumidifier.
6) Built-in Hygrometer/ Humidstat: A hygrometer measures the exact humidity in the indoor air, whereas a humidstat helps to control humidity levels and maintain them within the desired range. Thus, if you want to ensure that relative humidity (from 45%-50%) is achieved, and if you wish to automatically maintain the achieved humidity levels, you should choose a dehumidifier with a built-in hygrometer and humidity control.
7) Ease of Use: Having a dehumidifier that is easy to use and can conveniently be moved from place to place is an important feature for many people. If you too wish to have ease of use, you should select a dehumidifier that has an automatic restart option, automatic defrost, castor wheels, and an overflow protection valve.
8) Energy Star Rating: It is all very well to keep your dehumidifier running continuously so that you can achieve proper moisture levels in your indoor air and be free from health problems, mold, fungi, etc. But when the inflated electricity bill arrives, that's when your problems return. So, wouldn't it be great if you could get a unit that works at its best and most effectively, that too by consuming as less energy as possible? Well, that is what the Energy Star rating is all about. Thus, if you do not want to worry about high electricity costs, it may well be worth your while to buy an Energy Star rated dehumidifier.

A Guide To Dog Training - Instant Dog Mastery Course Review

A Guide To Dog Training

Before starting dog training, it is best that you know your options well. These days you can find many types of dog training, in many different places. These trainings vary in price and each one them has something different to offer.

The first type of dog training is known as puppy preschool. This is a dog training course meant for puppies that are about 6 weeks to 5 months old. These puppy preschool classes generally last for no more than 6 to 8 weeks. In these training sessions, your puppy is essentially taught how to socialize with people and as well as other puppies. Here your puppy also begins to learn how to sit down, stay at a place, and how to come.

The second type of dog training course is meant for the dogs that are at least 5 months old. This type of dog training is known as the basic dog training. The duration of these classes is usually about 8 to 10 weeks. This is the basic course, where your dog is taught the art of walking properly on a leash, sitting, staying, coming and heeling.

The third type of dog training course is known as the intermediate dog training. This dog training aims at teaching the dog mostly the same things that are taught in the basic training course, in a more detailed form. Here the dog is trained to stay for a longer span of time, and is also taught to follow the orders given by other people.

The intermediate dog training generally lasts for about 8 to 10 weeks, and is meant for those that are no less than 5 months old. It is essential for the dog to have completed its basic dog training course, or to be accustomed to the basic commands that could have been taught by the owner.

The next type of training course is known as the advanced dog training course. Here, once again, the course is quite similar to its previous one, i.e., the intermediate dog training course, ex cept for the fact that this time it is more detailed. Here, the dog is taught how to sit even without you in the view.

This training course is about 8 to 10 weeks long, and is meant for those that have completed their intermediate training. Here, they are also trained to walk beside their owners without a leash. Moreover, it gradually prepares the dog to take the Canine Good Citizen training course.
The Canine Good Citizen training for dogs is the last course. To pass this course, your dog will be taught the 10 necessary aspects.

This course is strictly meant for those dogs that have completed all the previous courses. The test is quite tough and can only be passed if the dog is really well behaved. Depending on whether your dog can pass, the course can last for several weeks.

Keeping this information in mind, you should be able to decide the dog training course best suited for your dog. However, you may seek the opinion of your local do g trainers to know more. Many trainers consult for free. So now you should be at least a step closer to introducing your dog into a training course!

Do you want to learn the exact same strategies and tactics that Pro Dog trainers use everyday in their Dog Training Businesses to solve dog behavior problems once and for all? If yes, then you need to get a copy of The Instant Dog Training Mastery Home Study Course

Frigidaire 70 Pint Dehumidifier Review - One of the Best Dehumidifiers for Basements

The Frigidaire FAD704TDP 70 Pint Dehumidifier is one of the best dehumidifiers for basements among the many portable dehumidifiers on the market today. While no dehumidifier is flawless the Frigidaire 70 Pint Dehumidifier is one of the best all round performers, is competitively priced and very well thought of by the many consumers who have written dehumidifier reviews of the FAD704TDP.

The most common reason for buying a portable dehumidifier in the USA is for use in a basement. For this reason the majority of portable dehumidifier purchases are of larger capacity units, in the 50 to 70 pint range. Smaller dehumidifiers are less popular and their use is confined mainly to small areas of the home, with an isolated humidity problem, and areas outside the home, such as garages, workshops, vehicles (particularly RV's) and boats.

A large capacity portable dehumidifier is a perfectly good choice for use in a basement provided two important conditions are met. First, the basement must be small enough for the dehumidifier to control the humidity without having to run continuously; second, and even more important, the air temperature in the basement must remain at a minimum of 60F degrees (15-16C) at all, or almost all, times.

Let us take these two conditions in turn. If the area of your basement is too large for a 70 pint dehumidifier it will run all the time and struggle to maintain relative humidity at 50% or less, the level necessary to prevent mold and mildew and to restrict the dust mite population. The dehumidifier will be costly to run, will wear out within a year or two and will neither protect your property adequately nor control allergens to the level needed to safeguard those who are sensitive. If you consider buying two portable dehumidifiers for a larger basement my advice to you is don't. A purpose-built basement dehumidifier will always be less expensive in the longer term despite having a much higher ticket price.

If your basement temperature falls below 60F degrees and stays there for weeks and months at a time a portable dehumidifier is a very poor investment. Although portable dehumidifiers have an "auto-defrost" function this does not make them suitable for operation in low temperatures, it merely protects the appliance from damage. Once again you will get far better service and value for money from a basement dehumidifier which is designed and built to be effective at cooler temperatures.

So, if you have a reasonably warm basement that is not too large why should you consider a Frigidaire FAD704TDP 70 Pint Dehumidifier? It has all the features you would expect it to have; Energy Star certification, an adjustable humidity, continuous drainage capability, 24 hour timer, easy to use electronic controls, an anti-microbial filter, a digital humidity read-out and, of course, auto-defrost. The only thing missing is auto-restart, so if the power fail s you will have to restart it manually. None of these features is exceptional in a room dehumidifier but all are necessary or desirable. The FAD704TDP is also reasonably quiet, more reliable than most and an acceptable weight. All in all it is a well balanced appliance and is available from some retailers at under $200. This represents excellent value for money which is the principal reason why I recommend this dehumidifier.

If you wish to consider alternative brands I would recommend the Danby DDR7009REE 70 Pint Dehumidifier, about which I could make much the same remarks. It is available at a similar price and does include auto-restart. Of the foreign imports my favorite is the Winix 70 Pint Dehumidifier. This unit is in a similar class to the two US made models but is rather more expensive. It justifies its higher price by the inclusion of an integral condensate pump with a 15 foot vertical lift capacity so if you do not have a convenient, floor level drain you may wish to consider this dehumidifier; in my opinion among the best dehumidifier imports on the market.

The other alternative is to go for the less powerful Frigidaire FAD504TDD 50 Pint Dehumidifier. Unless you have a fairly small basement I would advise caution here. While the 50 pint model is as sound as its "big brother" the modest saving on the ticket price is likely to be wiped out by higher energy costs.

Smaller dehumidifiers use less energy per hour but are less energy efficient than larger units. This is true regardless of the manufacturer. The Energy factor of the Frigidaire 50 Pint Dehumidifier is 1.6 litres (of water) per kilowatt hour. The 70 pint model has an energy factor of 1.8L/kw hr (figures from Energy Star). This means that the 70 pint unit extracts 12.5% more water per kw hr than the 50 pint model. In any basement the 50 pint dehumidifier will run for more hours per day than the 70 pint unit. Unless your basement is comfortably wit hin the size range with which a 50 pint dehumidifier can deal easily it will be more effective, and cheaper, to buy the FAD704TDP.

Who Pays in a Personal Injury Case?

Who Pays in a Personal Injury Case?

When it comes to recovering damages in most vehicle accident cases, most experienced personal injury law firms look to the responsible party’s automobile liability insurance or homeowners insurance. If the person who caused your injuries was employed with a company at the time he or she caused the accident and, was in the scope and course of employment, we may also pursue a claim against the employer company based upon a legal theory of respondent superior (the employer is liable for the wrongful conduct of its employees while on the job).

Other theories of liability may also be reviewed and pursued which might include a dangerous or defective product claim against the manufacturer or a maker of one of the vehicles parts or components (defective brakes, tires, unsafe/exploding gas tank design’).

If the other party has insufficient insurance or no insurance at all, you may be entitled to bring an uninsured motorist or underinsured motorist claim available against your own insurance company. In these circumstances, we will also use experts to undertake an asset background check to see whether or not there is any real property, bank accounts, home equity, or other significant assets to cover your losses. In many cases where the other party was either uninsured or insufficiently insured, we’ve been able to use these techniques to get payment on a large judgment against the other side.

The bottom line is that no settlement should take place and no settlement releases should be signed until you have full and complete answers to all of the above questions and issues.

Ten points to bear in mind when choosing a psychometric test

From personality tests and career guidance tests to tests that measure IQ and EQ, there's a wide range of psychometric tests currently available on the market. If you're trying to find the tests that best suit your company's needs, here are ten pointers you should bear in mind:
1. Each test has a target audience
Keep both your audience and your objectives in mind. A well-defined target profile will help you select the test or tests that are most appropriate to the position you are trying to fill. For example, the Reasoning Test (an IQ test) is aimed at defining a more technical profile, whereas the Emotional Intelligence Test Corporate, may be a better choice when you're recruiting for junior management positions. The same principle applies with personality tests; some are designed to be more management-oriented than others. Your best strategy is to choose a publisher that offers a wide range of tests from which you can choose two or three core tests.
2. Choose a scientifically validated test
The development and validation of a single psychometric test takes an average of four years of intensive research. Validity studies are carried out according to international psychometric standards and you should look for a reference to these in the user's guide of any test you intend to use. If the user's guide for a particular test contains only general information and has no reference to specific statistics, then the validity of this test is questionable. You should also look to see when a test was last updated; in order for any test to remain relevant, it should be revised approximately every three years.
3. Choose a test that's available on line
Nowadays, with Web 2.0 technology, tests that yield immediate results have a clear advantage over those that don't and online tests are every bit as reliable as the traditional, paper versions. Online tests will help you to save both time and money by allowing you to evaluate candidates and employees remotely.
4. Make sure you get customer support
Opting for online tests doesn't mean that you have to fend for yourself if you encounter a problem. But choosing a publisher with a reliable and easily accessible customer support service is a must.
5. Choose a test that's available in several languages
If your company has branches in more than one country, or you work with people from different language groups, you may need to consider tests that are available in a choice of languages. Choose a publisher that offers this option, but be aware that tests need to be re-validated after they have been translated the validation of a test in its original language is not enough to authenticate it in its translated form.
6. Look for a social desirability indicator
Make sure a test cannot be "outwitted" by a candidate who, consciously or subconsciously, seeks to give an overly favourable account of their personality or skills. Look at the way in which the questionnaire is structured, the transparency of the individual questions, and, most importantly, the presence of a social desirability indicator.
7. Look for a personalized report
To prevent interpretational mistakes and to offer effective feedback, tests should come with clear, written reports, giving unambiguous results accompanied by graphs and a summary.
8. Choose a test you can configure yourself
Reputable psychometric tests allow you to set your own parameters or compile a list of skills that you require to fill a specific position. This is a particularly effective feature that helps you to get the best out of any test, whether you're using it for recruitment or to manage internal mobility.
9.The training component
Some publishers require you to take a training course in their tests before you can usethem while others offer an optional training seminar. But whether it's mandatory or elective, you should take full advantage of this training stage in order to better understand the administration of psychometric tests and interpret them more effectively.
10. Financial investment
The best tests aren't necessarily the most expensive ones. Online versions can help you to keep your costs low while still maintaining the highest quality. Publishers often offer the choice of a single payment method or an unlimited subscription. Opting for an initial single payment gives you time to think more about the product, to take the test yourself, and even to try it on colleagues or volunteer candidates before completely committing yourself.

Claim and Lawsuit Filing Deadlines

Claim and Lawsuit Filing Deadlines

In almost every case, you only have a certain period of time to file a claim or lawsuit. If you fail to properly file or serve the required legal documents in a timely fashion, you will forever lose your legal right to pursue a claim or case against the responsible party. The requirements and time period you have to file a claim against a governmental entity such as a city, county or state is different than when dealing with a private party or company in a slip and fall or automobile, motorcycle, or large truck accident case. Medical malpractice cases also have their own unique requirements and limited time periods to take action.
