How To Protect Firewood From Mold

How To Protect Firewood From Mold | With the weather getting cooler in the Tampa area, a lot of people are getting in the mood for indoor fires. But did you know firewood can fall victim to mold growth?

Advanced Restoration, Inc. has some great tips for you on how to prevent mold on your firewood, whether you live in Holiday, Springhill, Pinellas Park, anywhere in the Bay Area, or anywhere you might want to use your fireplace. First off, lets talk about where you store your wood. It is best not to store firewood anywhere inside a home, especially in a basement/crawl space (though, this does not apply to most homes in Hillsborough, Pinellas or Pasco County). Store your firewood outside but not close to any entry doors and windows as airborne particles can still enter your home. Furthermore, store your firewood off the ground and protect it from rain and high humidity with cover by a waterproof tarp. There are some great ideas on the web on how to build a firewood rack. Although you could use any w ood and treat it with a protecting stain, we suggest you invest in a product made to resist rot, like TimberSIL (a non-toxic product made of wood that has been combined with glass).

Another alternative is Western red cedar. Though not treated, Western red cedar is naturally resistant to insects and is sturdy in harsh weather conditions. As for the tarp, you can use any plastic sheeting you'd like; however, we recommend at least a 4 mm thickness. An alternative to building your own log rack is to either purchase a log rack or use a firewood shed. Firewood sheds offer better protection from the rain and snow. However, they are not as good for seasoning purposes (when logs are exposed to the wind and sun, they are dried out dry would is better for fires). If you aren't much of a carpenter or just aren't in the mood to build a log rack, you can purchase a log rack. Commercial racks tend to be built of durable steel and most come with a custom fitting zip-up tarp.
